Netherlands v England: Preview

The UEFA Nations League Semi-Finals kicked-off on June 5th with Portugal beating Switzerland 3-1, and now it's England's turn to try and make it into the Final of the competition.

Most leading British Bookmakers offer the Three Lions as favourites to win the Netherlands v England UEFA Nations League match taking place at the Estadio D Afonso Henriques.

Surprisingly, the last 8 matches between England and the Netherlands have all been friendlies!

These sides haven’t actually met in a competition since 1996, when England won 4-1 in the UEFA European Championships that took place on home soil.

Since then, the 8 friendlies have only resulted in 1 win for England, which was the last time they met in 2018. The Netherlands however won 3 times, while the other 4 matches ended in draws.

Although England don’t have a great record against the Netherlands in recent years, Gareth Southgate’s English squad look the stronger side when looking at recent form.

England have won all 5 of the last 5 fixtures scoring a ton of goals in the process (18). The Netherlands on the other hand have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 1 scoring 11 times.

The Netherlands will be tough opponents, but England should in theory have the edge and progress through to the UEFA Nations League Final against Portugal on June 9th.

In the build up to the UEFA Nations League Semi-Final; Netherlands v England, we've looked at both team’s recent form, as well as the player injuries that could affect who you bet on.

England look like the much stronger side coming into the UEFA Nations League Semi-Finals.

Gareth Southgate’s men progressed to the final 4, having topped their group, which included Spain and Croatia, and are one of the bookmakers favourites to win the tournament.

Their qualifying group was one of the tougher groups in the competition, but England played very well and have managed to make it to their second Semi-Final in less than a year.

The English side have also won 6 of their last 7 matches, and it’s no surprise that online bookmakers offer them as the favourites to win and beat the Netherlands on Thursday.

Having scored an extraordinary 10 goals in the last 2 fixtures they've played, and only losing 1 match since their W. Cup campaign, England are a side that's going places.

The biggest issue that Southgate faces is whether key players Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson are fit and rested following their Champions League Final last weekend.

Any injuries or ill feelings between any Spurs and Liverpool players could upset the England managers match preparations and he really needs a fully fit squad to choose from.

There’s talk that Raheem Sterling could be the one to Captain the English side on his 50th Cap, but a lot will come down to which players feature in the Spurs v Liverpool match.

England will really need to bring their top game to this match, as the Netherlands took big wins on their way to the UEFA Nations League Semi-Finals and must be respected.

Ronald Koeman’s Dutch side have been playing reasonably well recently, having beaten France and then drawing with Germany to go through to the Semi-Finals of the tournament.

Surprisingly the Netherlands had an underwhelming W. Cup campaign last year, which saw them exit the competition in the qualifying rounds and not make the Finals in Russia.

t’s been a mixed bag for Koeman’s men since then, with only 7 wins in 14 matches, but they look more convincing of late and there's a lot more at stake in this UEFA Nations League match.

Luckily the Dutch side doesn’t have to deal with too many injury concerns in the run up to the England match, and Hans Hateboer will also be back from his suspension.

Realistically, the Netherlands side could easily beat England, but hopefully the Three Lions will work hard enough to prevent their rivals from making it through to the Final on June 9th.
