Newcastle v Arsenal: Match Preview

As the 2025/26 Premier League season settles into its rhythm, the fixture between Newcastle United and Arsenal this Sunday stands out as a key test for both clubs.

Newcastle will be looking to assert themselves with home advantage, while Arsenal, who are chasing consistency, will view this as the perfect platform to kick-on from for the rest of the season, and that illusive first title under Arteta.

Newcastle came into the new Premier League season with high expectations after finishing strongly in the previous season, and qualifying for the Champions League.

Unfortunately, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side form has been patchy, with only 1 win from their first 5 games, and only 3 goals scored. Although they have home advantage, they'll have to work hard to beat an in-form Arsenal who are especially strong defensively.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side head to St James Park after a strong start to their campaign, and having added a number of quality players during the summer transfer window.

From their first five Premier League fixtures, they've secured 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss, collecting 10 points and currently sit in 2nd place in the table with only 2 goals conceded.

British Bookmakers odds suggest they're expecting Arsenal to win this clash, and if the form of the two sides is anything to go by, Arteta’s men could return to London with all 3 points.

In the lead up to Newcastle v Arsenal, we've taken a look at both team’s recent performances, and any player injuries that could affect either managers match preparations.

Newcastle v Arsenal will be broadcast live on Sky Sports at 4:30pm on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle: Team News

Newcastle have also added quite a few players to their squad over the summer, and luckily there aren't too many injury concerns for them heading into the Arsenal match.

Despite losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool, Howe's been heavily rotating his squad this season, most likely due to the high number of competitions they're competing in this year.

This was clearly evident in their last 3 games, a 0-0 draw against Bournemouth last week, a narrow 1-0 win over Wolves, and the dire 0-0 bire draw against newly promoted Leeds.

Newcastle's start to the new season has been underwhelming to say the least.

Fabian Schar is one player set to miss out after he suffered a head injury against Barcelona, and is likely to be out until early October after having to follow standard concussion protocols.

New signing Joanne Wissa has also been ruled out with a knee injury, while summer signing Jacob Ramsey is Newcastle’s only other injury concern. Ramsey suffered an ankle injury after a tackle in the Leeds match and may not be back until after the next International break.

After an impressive rise in recent seasons under Eddie Howe, including European qualification and bold signings, expectations were high. However, their current league form reflects a side who are unsurprisingly struggling to find rhythm, particularly in attack.

With just 3 goals scored, and 3 conceded in their opening 5 fixtures, Newcastle currently sit mid-table in 13th place, and are yet to show any signs of building any momentum.

While the team has shown flashes of quality and resilience, at this early stage they remain far from the high-intensity side that has dazzled fans in previous seasons.

Defensively, Newcastle have been relatively solid They’ve managed to keep opponents from dominating games, with several results narrow-margin draws, or low-scoring encounters.

Their ability to hold off stronger sides and avoid heavy defeats is a testament to Eddie Howe’s organised back line, led by the ever-reliable Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier.

However, the problem lies in their transition from defence to attack, where the team often looks blunt. Creativity in midfield has been sporadic, and without a consistent striker in form, converting possession into goals has been a serious issue.

The Magpies have shown glimpses of their previous form - high pressing, quick transitions, and collective effort. Their 1–0 home win against Wolves, for instance, was hard-fought and showed they can still grind out results when needed.

Defensive discipline and home form are keeping them afloat, but attacking issues and a congested schedule are obstacles, and clear areas ripe for improvement.

The coming months will be crucial for Newcastle, and If Eddie Howe can unlock more from his forwards and integrate new players effectively, they could turn this campaign into a success.

Newcastle: Form

Looking at the last 5 fixtures that Newcastle have played in all competitions, they've won 1, drawn 2, and lost 2 scoring 4 goals (0.8 goals per game) and conceding on 5 occasions.

Arsenal: Team News

After an injury plagued season last year, Mikel Arteta would have started the new season hoping for a full strength squad - especially after signing the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, and Piero Hincapie to bolster it.

Unfortunately there have been a few injury set backs already, with the latest being new signing Noni Madueke, who suffered a serious knee injury in his last outing against Man City.

It’s hard to say how long he'll be out for, with Arteta hoping it’s weeks rather than months.

Martin Odegaard is still in question for this weekend’s game as he is still recovering from a shoulder injury. Although he's been seen training, he may not be fully fit for the trip to Newcastle.

Gabriel Jesus is also set to miss most of the season with an ACL rupture, while Kai Havertz is still recovering from knee surgery and won’t be making an appearance anytime soon.

Arsenal’s 2025/26 Premier League campaign has started strongly, as the Gunners look to build on their recent seasons of progress since Arteta took charge back in 2019.

After narrowly missing out on the title in previous years, Arsenal have entered this campaign with renewed focus, tactical maturity, and a much deeper squad thanks to great signings.

Arsenal have won 3 of their 5 Premier League games, drawing 1, and losing 1.

They're currently in 2nd place, and what stands out most in their early form is their solid defensive record, having conceded just 2 goals - both to title rivals (Liverpool and Man City).

A key strengths of Arsenal’s early-season form has been their defensive organisation.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães continue to form one of the most effective centre-back pairings in the league, supported by disciplined, yet attacking full-backs, and a goalkeeper in David Raya who remains a good distributor and confident under pressure.

The midfield, anchored by Declan Rice has been dominant, helping them dictate the tempo and recover possession quickly. However, there have been some concerns about their level of finishing in certain games, particularly against well-organised opposition.

In their 1-1 draw against Man City last week, the Gunners controlled large parts of the game but struggled to create clear-cut chances until Eberechi Eze was introduced in the second half.

It took a late goal from Gabriel Martinelli to rescue a point, assisted by Exe, highlighting both their persistence and their current need for sharper execution in front of goal.

Arteta has options off the bench who can genuinely change games - something the team lacked in prior seasons. Substitutes have already had an impact this season, with players like Leandro Trossard contributing in key moments.

However, injuries have begun to creep in, and success will depend on how Arsenal manage these absences, especially in key matches like the one against Newcastle on Sunday.

Despite minor challenges, the overall mood around the club is one of cautious optimism. Arteta’s team looks mature, tactically aware, and mentally tougher than in previous seasons.

Their ability to stay in games, grind out results, and remain composed under pressure has improved noticeably. They'll need to capitalise on these strengths - especially with a run of favourable fixtures coming up after they've taken on Newcastle at St. James' Park.

Arsenal: Form
