Man Utd v Chelsea: Betting Preview

Man Utd are set to host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon in their highly anticipated opening match of the new Premier League season.

Although Chelsea finished ahead of Man Utd last season, 3rd compared to 6th, British Bookmakers actually offer Man Utd as the favourites to win this clash.

Man Utd v Chelsea is probably the biggest fixture of the opening weekend, with 2 of the top 6 contenders for the title battling it out to get their first points on the board.

The last 2 Premier League fixtures both ended in draws. Man Utd won 2 of the previous 3 matches, while Chelsea have only beaten Utd in 1 of the last 5 Premier League matches.

Both sides have also got new managers, and while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to start his first full season with a win, Frank Lampard will also be looking to make an impression in his first Premier League match in charge of Chelsea.

In the lead up to Man Utd v Chelsea, we've taken a look at both team’s recent performances, and if any last minute signings could affect either managers preparations for the match.

Man Utd: Team News

Man Utd had a shocking end to their last Premier League campaign, where they only won 2 of their last 7 matches, and barely managed to secure a 6th place finish.

On the back of a much better finish the previous season, when they came 2nd to the bookmakers favourites Man City, it wasn’t what they'd hoped for after Mourinho moved on.

Solskjaer is now in charge, and although there's been a bit of controversy over the summer, they've certainly the talent to win if they show the hunger they had under Alex Ferguson.

New boy Harry Maguire will be ready to make his mark on the United side, after is £80 million transfer from Leicester - making him the most expensive defender in the World.

Man Utd's pre-season matches have showed that they're playing a more consistent game than towards the end of last season when they seemed to switch off a lot in most matches.

They haven't actually lost any of their pre-season friendlies, which is the identical record that Chelsea have in their pre-season results, with 5 wins and 1 draw under their belts.

If Man Utd can maintain their form, hopefully we'll see more of the spectacular football we've come to expect from the side over the years, although Chelsea aren't an easy first match!

Man Utd: Form

Looking at the last 5 fixtures that Man Utd have played in all competitions, they've won 4 and drawn 1, scoring a total of 10 goals (2 goals per game) and conceding a total of 3 goals.

Chelsea: Team News

Chelsea last won the Premier League back in 2016-17, however they didn’t have a great season in 2017-18, but seemed to return to form last season, finishing in 3rd place on 72 points.

The London side come into the new Premier League campaign under Frank Lampard, following the departure of Maurizio Sarri back in June after less than a year in charge.

It will be interesting to see how Lampard approaches the Man Utd match, especially as he will be without Eden Hazard who realised his boyhood dream and moved to Real Madrid.

Just like United, Chelsea have had a pretty strong pre-season, racking up 4 wins and 2 draws from their last 6 friendlies, and they won’t be an easy side for Man Utd to beat.

Lampard’s squad have been fairly consistent in recent years, and managed to win last seasons Europa League, without a single defeat throughout the entire competition.

An imposed transfer ban may cause them some issues longer term, but luckily Chelsea are a robust side, and they definitely have the ability to do well in this seasons Premier League.

Although online bookmakers see them as underdogs against Man Utd, if they can win or draw, they then have a run of easier matches against Leicester, Norwich, Sheffield Utd and Wolves.

Chelsea: Form

Chelsea's record over their last 5 matches in all competitions is also won 4, drawn 1. They've scored more than Man Utd, 17 in total (3.4 goals per game) but conceded more (9).
