Man City v Man Utd: Match Preview

The first Manchester Derby of the new Premier League season takes place at the Etihad this Sunday, when Pep's underperforming City side take on Amorim's underachievers.

The last time these teams met in the Premier League, it resulted in a goalless draw, and with poor performances from both sides this season, the 3 points will be crucial to each.

The upcoming Manchester Derby will no doubt be one of the most intense and closely-watched games this season, especially coming so soon after the International break.

Both clubs enter the weekend with distinct narratives: City grappling with injuries, and United hoping to continue momentum after their dramatic late win over Burnley in their last match.

Both sides come into the 197th Manchester Derby after unconvincing starts to their 2025/26 Premier League campaigns, with each having only won 1 game so far this season.

Man City may have the home advantage, but are currently only sitting in 13th place after 3 games, with a total of 3 points. Pep Guardiola’s side beat Wolves 4-0 in their opening game, but then lost to 0-2 Spurs and 2-1 to Brighton in their next outings.

In playing at the Etihad, Man City may have home advantage, but Pep Guardiola is dealing with a raft of injuries that looks to have ruled out several key players for Sunday's Derby.

Man Utd meanwhile come into this weekend’s game in 9th place in the table on 4 points.

An opening day 1-0 loss at home to Arsenal was followed up with a 1-1 draw away to Fulham. Rúben Amorim’s side then had a dramatic win win over Burnley at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a controversial 97th-minute penalty to edge the game 3-2.

Amorim seems to still be struggling to find his feet in the Premier League since taking the reigns in 2024, and will really need a win over their fierce rivals this weekend to appease fans.

In the lead up to Man City v Man Utd, we've taken a look at both team’s recent performances, and any player injuries that could affect either managers match preparations.

Man City: Team News

Man City are dealing with at least 10 injured players ahead of their clash against Man Utd, which could seriously impact how Pep sets out his team in this highly anticipated game.

It's looking like Guardiola will be without key players including John Stones, Phil Foden, Savinho, Josko Gvardiol, Abdukodir Khusanov, Mateo Kovacic, Rayan Cherki and Kalvin Phillips who are all set to be missing from the match day squad.

Unfortunately Man City also have a new injury concern after Omar Marmoush was taken off while playing for Egypt in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers earlier in the week.

Being without key creative players like Marmoush and Cherki will be a challenge for Man City, who have struggled in that department ever since the departure of Kevin De Bruyne.

Man City will no doubt be looking to Erling Haaland to inspire them in the final third, but it's who'll be supplying the chances for the Norwegian goal machine that'll be Pep's main concern.

Haaland has scored 3 goals so far this season, and comes fresh from netting five times against Moldova in the week, and so Man City will be hoping he continues his fine form on Sunday.

Man City have also lost their last 2 home matches against Man Utd, each by 2 goals to 1. Once in the Premier League on December 15th 2024, and the other in the FA Cup on May 24th 2024.

The also lost the last home match they played in the Premier League 2-0 to Spurs, and so their home advantage over Man Utd looks unlikely to effect the result of the game.

Man City can still be a dominant force on their day, and Guardiola is known for his tactical control and the fine margins he works with in games, but his record against Amorim isn't great.

Man City: Form

Looking at the last 5 fixtures that Man City have played in all competitions, they've won 2, drawn 0, and lost 3 scoring a total of 11 goals (2.2 goals per game), and conceding on 8 occasions.

Man Utd: Team News

Rúben Amorim also has a few injuries to contend with ahead of the match against Man City on Sunday, but overall his squad has less issues in that department than their rivals.

Lisandro Martinez has been definitely ruled out with a serious knee injury, while Matheus Cunha is still struggling to regain fitness after coming off early in their 3-2 win against Burnley.

The forward was forced off in the 31st minute, and then had to withdraw from the Brazil squad for the internationals and looks unlikely to be ready for the match.

Unfortunately Mason Mount is also a doubt for the Derby, along with full-back Diogo Dalot.

Fortunately Casemiro has returned early from Brazil duty after a suspension, and is expected to be fit and could be involved at some stage of the upcoming Manchester Derby.

Man Utd have only won 1 of their last 6 matches in all competitions, the 3-2 win over Burnley in their last match, with Amorim clearly under pressure after a disappointing start to the season.

The late win over Burnley has provided a bit of breathing room for him, and a slight reprieve from the fans, but squad fitness issues (Dalot, Cunha, Mount) will likely complicate plans.

Amorim will need to capitalise on Man Utd’s narrow win in their last outing, and continue that never-say-die attitude against City, with Casemiro’s timely return likely to be key to that.

The last time Man Utd played at the Etihad was back in December 2024 when they came away with a 2-1 win, and historically they tend to do quite well playing in City's back yard.

Man Utd: Form

Man Utd's record over their last 5 matches in all competitions is won 1, drawn 3 and lost 1. They've scored less goals than Man City, 7 in total (1.4 per game), but conceded less (6).

There have been 56 matches between Man City and Man Utd in the Premier League era, with Man Utd again having the upper hand with 26 victories compared to 20 for Man City.

Of the 26 wins that United have had over City, 14 of them were actually played away at their rivals ground, with 12 coming on home turf at Old Trafford.

The 20 victories that Man City recorded were split into 11 wins at the Etihad, and 9 away.

The most recent Premier League fixture between these two sides occurred on the 6th of April in 2025, with an Old Trafford crowd of 73,738 seeing the match play out as a goalless draw.

The last time the Man City took on Man Utd at the Etihad was on the 15th of December 2024 with Ruben Amorim's men coming away with a 2-1 win over Pep Guardiola's side.

Joško Gvardiol scored first for Man City in the 36th minute, only for Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo to score in the 88th, and 90th minute to seal the win for the away side.

The last 5 Manchester Derby's that have occurred in the Premier League have resulted in 2 wins for Man City, 2 wins for Man Utd and the other fixture ending in a 0-0 draw.

The highest score that Man City have ever beaten Man Utd by in the Premier League was the 6-1 victory on the 23rd of October in 2011 when they played each other at Old Trafford.

Man City came away from their fiercest rivals having scored a ton of goals; 2 from Mario Balotelli, 2 from Edin Džeko as well as individual goals from Sergio Agüero and David Silva.

The biggest win that Man Utd have ever had over Man City in the Premier League era also occurred at Old Trafford back on the 10th of November in 1994 when they beat them 5-0.

The fixture was notable for the fact that Andrei Kanchelskis scored a hat-trick in the match with Eric Cantona and Mark Hughes also adding to Man Utd's huge goal tally.

Man City v Man Utd - 11/11/2018

Our Premier League betting preview for this week is the corker that's set to kick-off at 4:30pm on Sunday November 11th when Man City take on Man Utd in the Manchester Derby...

The first Manchester Derby of the 2018/19 Premier League season takes place this Sunday, when Man City welcome local rivals Man Utd to The Etihad Stadium.

Our Man City v Man Utd betting preview checks out which bookmakers offer the best odds, how each team is performing, and the player injuries that could cause concern for both managers.

Man City have had a fantastic start to their campaign, and it’s no surprise that bookmakers offer the hosts as the favourites to win one of the most anticipated matches of the season so far!

If you’re planning on having a punt on the Manchester Derby, make sure that you take advantage of some of the brilliant betting offers that are up for grabs on this epic clash!

These 2 teams have played each other a total of 42 times in the Premier League, with Man Utd wining 21 of these clashes while City secured 13 victories, and the other 8 ended in draws.

Although Man Utd have won more fixtures historically, it’s been more of a mixed bag in recent times, with 2 wins for each side and 2 draws coming out of the last 6 Premier League fixtures.

Without a doubt Man City look much stronger this season, and given they haven’t lost a match so far, Pep Guardiola will be determined not to lose to their Manchester adversaries.

The current Premier League champions are having an absolute stellar season, winning 9 of their 11 matches and keeping 7 clean sheets so far.

Man City

Pep Guardiola’s side come into the Manchester Derby sitting in the top spot on 29 points after a spectacular 6-1 victory against Bournemouth in their last outing, and a win against Man Utd would be the icing on the cake.

Not only would it be great for to beat their Manchester rivals, but a win could also extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table even further.

It would also open the gap between Chelsea and Liverpool, who only trail them by 2 points.

Man City have scored on average 3 goals per match this season, with Sergio Aguero scoring 7, while Raheem Sterling has also added 6 to their total of 33 so far.

If they can keep up this performance they could easily break their scoring record!

Given that Man City face West Ham, Bournemouth and Watford after the Man Utd match, there are plenty of opportunities to add to their points and goal tally.

Unfortunately Man City will be missing Kevin De Bruyne for the Derby after he suffered a second knee-ligament injury against Fulham. Bravo and Mangala are also set to miss this clash, while Gundogan and Otamendi are also a doubt.

Man Utd

Man Utd head to the Etihad stadium sitting in 7th place on the league table, and 9 points behind Man City, after taking 6 points from a possible 6 from their last 2 matches.

A 2-1 victory against Everton was followed up by another 2-1 win against Bournemouth last weekend, and it looks as if Man Utd are starting to regain their form.

It hasn’t been a great campaign so far for José Mourinho’s men, and Saturday’s clash against Man City is pretty much their most important match of the season to date.

Although Man Utd won the last Premier League match against City at The Etihad Stadium, it will be a very big ask for Utd to come away with all 3 points on this occasion.

Mourinho could be without Lukaku who is still in doubt, while Fellaini will miss the Manchester Derby due to a groin injury, and Dalot and Valencia have also been ruled out.

Man Utd came 2nd to Man City last season in the race for the Premier League title, and really don’t look as if they have the confidence to beat them away from home on Sunday.

In saying that, there is a lot to play for and with such intense rivalry between these sides, Man Utd won’t go down without a fight - especially with Mourinho in the dug out.

Man City v Man Utd - 07/04/2018

A match a lot of football fans are probably betting on this week, has to be the Manchester Derby when Premier League leaders Man City take on 2nd placed Man Utd at the Etihad...

A win for Man City would see them clinch the title whilst beating their fiercest rivals!

Man City host Northern rivals Man Utd this Saturday in The Manchester Derby, in what will be the most important game of this weekend’s Premier League action.

Not only is the Derby a highlight of the English football calendar, but if Man City win, Pep Guardiola's side would secure the 2017/18 Premier League title!

Man City won the first clash of the season between these two, and bookmakers offer them as the firm favourites to win the second Manchester Derby this Saturday.

The result could be crucial for Man Utd's push for a top 4 finish, and with so much at stake, they'll be determined to stop their fierce rivals securing the title this early in the season.

You can watch Man City v Man Utd live on Sky Sports at 17:30pm on 07/04/2018.

In the lead up to what’s set to be a massive clash, let’s take a look both team’s form and which bookmakers offer best odds on the outcome of Man City v Man Utd.

Man City

If you’re betting that Man City will beat their rivals and secure the Premier League title, a lot of bookmakers offer the best odds including one of our favourites, bet365.

Make sure you check out the bet365 signup offer, or the fantastic bet365 App if you haven't yet joined what in our opinion, is one of the best bookmakers in the business.

Man City could win the league if they can beat arch rivals Man Utd on Saturday, in what would be one of the earliest Premier League title wins ever!

Pep Guardiola's men have had a fantastic season, only losing 1 Premier League match to Liverpool in January - who also just beat them in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Although this will have been a blow to Man City’s confidence, they will be even more determined to win the game against Man Utd and add another trophy to their cabinet.

Luckily Guardiola has pretty much a full squad to choose from for the game.

Sergio Aguero, who has missed a few weeks due to injury could be back in the line up for Saturday, while Benjamin Mendy is still ruled out with a longer-term knee injury.

With such a strong team line up, it’s no wonder that Man City are bookmakers favourite to win.

Man Utd

If you’re betting on Man Utd coming away from the Etihad with a win and preventing Man City from winning the Premier League, William Hill currently offer the best odds.

Plus, if you've yet to join this highly rated British Bookmaker, make sure that you check out the latest William Hill signup offer to see if it's the kind of free bet deal that you could use.

Man Utd have won their last 4 Premier League games, and although they are currently sitting in 2nd place, they really need to secure more wins if they want to grab a top 4 finish.

It’s tight at the top of the table with Liverpool and Spurs only a few points behind Man Utd.

Not only would a loss against northern rivals Man City be devastating, it could also push Mourinho’s squad down the table and impact their finish to the season.

Fortunately José Mourinho doesn’t have too many injuries to contend with, especially with Phil Jones due to return after missing games due to a hamstring injury.

It looks as if the only players missing will be Sergio Romero and Daley Blind, and if Man Utd play for the draw on Saturday, the could very well prevent Man City from winning the title.

When looking at the stats, 2 of the last 5 Premier League clashes between Man City and Man Utd have ended in draws, the result could be a realistic outcome.

Both teams have a lot to play for, and with neither willing to let the other win, The Manchester Derby could easily end in a stalemate with a point a piece for both sides.

Man City v Man Utd - 20/03/2016

Man City host fierce rivals Man Utd at the Etihad this Sunday in the latest Manchester Derby, and it’s set to be one of the highlights of the weekends Premier League action...

With both sides looking for a top four finish, Man City vs Man Utd will be a cracking match to bet on with bookmakers offering some decent betting odds and signup offers on the tie.

Sunday's Derby is a crucial game for both teams, with Man City desperate to get back into title contention, and Man Utd wanting to secure Champions League football next season.

The last time Man City played Man Utd in the Premier League was at Old Trafford back in October, when the game ended all square with a boring 0-0 draw.

Man Utd had managed to secure a 4-2 victory over Man City in the previous Premier League encounter and they’ll be hoping for a similar result this time round.

Man City vs Man Utd is live on Sky Sports 1 at 16:00 on Sunday March 20th 2016 and will be a great match to bet on, whether you're a fan of each of the teams, or not.

Man City

If you’re betting on the bookmakers favourites Man City winning Sunday's Manchester Derby, William Hill offers the best odds on a home win at 10/11.

Man City are having a pretty strong season, having won 15 games, drawn 6 and lost 8.

They’re currently sitting in 4th place in the league table, but really need a win to stay in the top 4 and push forward in their pursuit of a Premier League title.

The Blues come into the game having won 4 of their last 6 six encounters against van Gaal’s squad, but Man Utd’s 4-2 victory last season put an end to their winning run.

This was then followed up with a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in October, but Pellegrini is determined to return to their winning ways and take a full 3 points this weekend.

Luckily Pellegrini ‘s injury list isn’t as extensive as Utd’s and he’s pretty much working with a full squad with only Delph, De Bruyne and Nasri missing.

Man City have performed much better against Man Utd at the Etihad Stadium over the past few seasons, and Manuel Pellegrini is determined to secure his 3rd victory in 3 years.

Man Utd

If you’re betting on Man Utd beating Man City, BetVictor offers the best odds at 7/2.

Man Utd have had an unconvincing Premier League campaign, however their performances have improved of late having won 2 of their last 3 Premier League games.

Man Utd come into the game on the back of losing to West Ham in the FA Cup, and a tough European game against Liverpool, giving them 2 days to prepare for the match.

There’s a lot of pressure on Louis van Gaal to achieve a Champions League place this season, and a victory against Man City would give them the 3 points they desperately need.

They currently sit in 6th place on 47 points, just 4 points below Man City and a win would put them in a stronger position coming into their next games against Everton and Spurs.

Van Gaal still has a number of injuries plaguing the squad, with Keane, Bothwick-Jackson, Rooney, Jones, Young and Shaw missing although Valencia is expected to be fit.
