Liverpool v Man Utd: Match Preview

One of the Premier League's most iconic rivalries takes place this Sunday afternoon, when Man Utd travel the short distance to Anfield to take on arch rivals Liverpool.

This match is always one that sparks fierce debate, excitement and anticipation from football fans all over the World, with the next instalment promising to be no different.

Even though 2 of the last 3 matches have ended in draws, Liverpool are having a stronger season than Man Utd, and it’s easy to see why bookmakers offer them as favourites.

Despite a recent dip in form seeing them lose 3 in a row, Liverpool are still difficult to beat at Anfield, and Arne Slot will also be determined to get them back on track with a win over United.

Liverpool are still among the frontrunners for the Premier League title, but they really need to tighten up defensively, develop some consistency, and manage the squad's fitness.

If they can steady their form, especially in challenging away fixtures, and get their new signings fully firing, they are well‑placed to compete for the title or at least secure a top‑two finish.

Man Utd on the other hand appear to be consistently inconsistent as they've developed a pattern of winning matches, but then losing the next irrespective of who they're playing.

This needs to change sharpish, as they're simply not performing to the levels expected of Man Utd with the their new signings yet to hit the form that they showed last season.

In the lead up to Liverpool v Man Utd, we've taken a look at both team’s recent performances, and any player injuries that could affect either managers match preparations.

Liverpool v Man Utd will be broadcast live on Sky Sports at 4:30pm on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool: Team News

Unfortunately it looks like Liverpool may have a few injury concerns heading into their first match after the international break against Man Utd on Sunday afternoon.

One of the biggest is Alisson Becker, who didn’t play for Brazil against South Korea and Japan during the internationals. His hamstring injury is likely to sideline him for a few more weeks.

Ibrahima Konate is also set to miss the derby against Man Utd, after he was unable to finish Liverpool's last Premier League match against Chelsea due to a thigh injury.

Hopefully Wataru Endo iand Ryan Gravenberch, who has also struggled with a hamstring injury in recent weeks, will be back in contention for this weekend’s match.

The summer transfer window saw Liverpool making big changes to their squad: notably Alexander Isak arriving from Newcastle for a record fee, and Trent leaving for Real Madrid.

There has also been big expectations surrounding Florian Wirtz, a high‑profile signing from Bayer Leverkusen, but his stats so far this season have been largely disappointing.

Despite not matching last years performances, Liverpool have been in a solid position since the start of the season, and come into the Man Utd game sitting in 2nd place in the table.

Under the stewardship of Arne Slot, they've continued to evolve, blending experience with youthful energy and have displayed a mixed blend of defensive frailties and attacking flair.

With 15 points from 7 matches, Liverpool are well within reach of the top spot despite a mixture of strong victories and frustrating losses, most recently against Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

In terms of attacking play, Liverpool's front three, led by Mohamed Salah, have continued to deliver, albeit in less impressive manor than consistently displayed last season.

Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, and Dominik Szoboszlai have offered creativity and balance, though questions remain about their ability to dominate games consistently.

However, it's the defence that has raised the most concerns this season, with Slot yet to settle on a regularly starting back four. Virgil van Dijk’s leadership remains crucial, but the support from the rest of the defence has been inconsistent.

It was thought that new signings Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez would improve the defence, but both have struggled, with Frimpong still yet to establish himself as a regular starter.

Liverpool: Form

Looking at the last 5 fixtures that Liverpool have played in all competitions, they've won 2, drawn 0, and lost 3 scoring a total of 6 goals (1.2 goals per game) and conceding 7 times.

Man Utd: Team News

With the expected return of Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez, it looks as if Ruben Amorim will have nearly a full squad to choose from for the short trip to Anfield.

Lisandro Martinez has been struggling to regain form after suffering a cruciate ligament injury, but there's hope that he will be back in the squad for this weekend’s match.

Noussair Mazraoui hasn’t played since September 20th, and If he doesn’t experience any further setbacks, the defender could also make his 4th appearance of the season against Liverpool.

After finishing in 15th place last season, Man Utd's worst in the Premier League era, Amorim had positioned the new season as one to rebuild the squad and improve confidence.

Despite many new signings, unfortunately this hasn’t happened and Man Utd have had a turbulent start to their campaign, and come into Sunday's derby sitting in 10th place.

Amorim’s side have only secured 10 points from 7 matches with their form erratic.

They’ve shown glimpses of brilliance, especially in attacking play, but have struggled with consistency. In particular, United’s defence has been shaky, and has lacked solidity.

Man Utd have conceded way too many goals, and their inability to keep clean sheets has been a constant issue, with their first only coming in their 2-0 win against Sunderland on October 4th.

Despite signing the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, scoring also remains an issue.

After only finding the net on 44 occasions last season, expectations were that new attacking faces would help. But early indications suggest the scoring drought hasn’t fully lifted.

Man Utd's top scorers so far this season are new signing Benjamin Šeško, and imminent club legend Bruno Fernandes, with both only finding the back of the net on two occasions.

As of now, the 2025/26 Premier League season is one of repair and recalibration for United.

They're not title contenders, and a top-four finish looks ambitious. But climbing from last seasons 15th place finish into a stable mid/top‑six position, may be seen as progress.

The stakes are rising: the team must start stringing together consistent performances, find more goals, and reduce the errors that are leading to silly goals, and a lack of clean sheets.

If Amorim can impose structure and unlock the teams attacking potential, then fans may see signs of a genuine revival. But the margin for error is thin, and the longer Man Utd linger in mediocrity, the more the pressure will be mounting behind the scenes.

Man Utd: Form

Man Utd's record over their last 5 matches in all competitions is won 3, drawn 0 and lost 2. They've scored more goals than Liverpool, 8 in total (1.6 per game), but conceded more (9).

Liverpool v Man Utd: Stats

Liverpool have played Man Utd 244 times since their first match back in 1894, with United currently having the upper hand having won 91 fixtures, compared to 82 wins for Liverpool.

There have been 66 matches between Liverpool and Man Utd in the Premier League era, with United again having the upper hand with 29 victories compared to 20 wins for Liverpool.

Of the 20 wins that Liverpool had, 12 of them were played at Anfield, and 8 away. The 29 victories that Man Utd recorded were split into 17 wins at Old Trafford, and 12 away wins.

The last 5 Premier League matches involving these two teams have resulted in 2 wins for Liverpool, 0 wins for Man Utd and 3 of the encounters ending in a stalemate.

The last Premier League fixture between these two sides occurred on the 5th of June earlier this year (2025), with an Anfield crowd of 60,275 watching a 2-2 draw play out.

It was a topsy-turvy game, with Lisandro Martínez first giving Man Utd the lead on 52 minutes, only for Cody Gakpo to cancel out their lead 7 minutes later.

Mohamed Salah scored a penalty in the 70th minute to give Liverpool the lead, only for Amad Diallo to level the match for Man Utd in the 80th minute.

Liverpool have the much better record over the past 22 matches in all competitions between these two sides, having lost just 4 times; 2 in the Premier League and 2 in the FA Cup.

The biggest win that Liverpool have ever had over North West rivals Man Utd in the Premier League occurred on the 5th of March in 2023, when they hammered them 7-0 at Anfield.

Amazingly Cody Gakpo only opened the scoring for Liverpool just before half-time in the 43rd minute. A couple of goals for both Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah, another for Gakpo and then Roberto Firmino in the 88th minute saw Liverpool record their record win over United.

The highest score that Man Utd have ever beaten Liverpool by in the Premier League was the 4-0 win on the 5th of April back in 2003, when they played each other at Old Trafford.

A couple of penalties for Ruud Van Nistelrooy in the 5th and 65th minute, and then goals from club legend Ryan Giggs and then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compounding Liverpool's misery.

Liverpool v Man Utd - 16/12/2018

Man Utd travel the short distance to Anfield Sunday afternoon, where they will take on Liverpool in one of the biggest rivalries in the Premier League, the North West Derby...

Man Utd have historically achieved more success when these teams have played each other throughout history, however bookmakers offer Liverpool as the front-runners to win this one.

It's one of the most highly anticipated derbies of the Premier League season, and although Liverpool haven’t beaten Man Utd in the competition since they managed a cracking 3-0 win back in march 2014, they're the bookmakers favourites to win on Sunday.

José Mourinho’s side may have a better track record over the years, but they've looked unconvincing this season, and will struggle to beat a Liverpool side that's bang on form!

Both teams made it through to the last 16 of this seasons Champions League this week with Liverpool finishing the group stages stronger with a 1-0 win over Napoli to finish second.

Man Utd on the other hand lost their final match away to Valencia 2-1 but also ended up second in their group and secured their position in the latter stages of the Champions League.

In the lead up to the Liverpool v Man Utd match, we've taken a look at both team’s performances of late, and any injuries that could affect either managers preparations for the derby.

Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are having an amazing Premier League season, and continue to be the only unbeaten side in the competition, after Man City lost to Chelsea last weekend.

Their last outing saw The Reds secure a spectacular 4-0 victory against Bournemouth, with Mo Salah scoring 3 of the 4 goals, giving Liverpool the points to knock Man City from the top spot.

Bookmakers offer Liverpool as favourites to beat Man Utd, and although they’ve only won 2 of their last 11 fixtures against United, Liverpool look the much stronger side this season.

If they can take 3 points from this match, Klopp then has a couple of easier fixtures against Wolverhampton and Newcastle before they meet Arsenal at the end of December.

A win against Man Utd would go a long way in helping to hold their position at the top of the league table, and keep Man City at bay over the upcoming busy Christmas period.

Unfortunately, there are a few injury concerns for Liverpool, but it looks as if Lallana, Lovren and Solanke will be fit, although Gomez, Clyne and Oxlade-Chamberlain have all been ruled out.

This won’t be an easy match for Liverpool, it is a North West derby after all, but based on their performances so far this season, there's absolutely no reason why they can beat their rivals.

Man Utd

It’s fair to say that Man Utd aren't having their best season under José Mourinho as they're currently only in 6th place and have only one win in their last 5 Premier League fixtures.

Man Utd also come into the match a staggering 16 points behind league leaders Liverpool having only picked up 6 points out of a possible 15 over the same period.

In fact, Mourinho’s side have only won 7 of their 16 Premier League matches so this season, whereas Liverpool have nearly double the number of victories having won 13 out of 16.

Although Man Utd have a better track record against Liverpool, 4 of the last 5 matches against The Reds in all competitions have ended in draws, and Mourinho’s squad could be hard pushed to beat Liverpool in this Sunday’s North West Derby.

Unfortunately Mourinho also has a few key players missing, with Sanchez, Smalling, Shaw and Lindelof all set to remain on the sideline, however Martial and Bailly are expected to return.

Man Utd really could do with another win if they want to even be in with a chance of finishing in the top 4, but Liverpool will not be willing to surrender their unbeaten run to their fierce rivals.

Unfortunately, with Liverpool's amazing home record this season (6 wins, 1 draw) even a stalemate against their fiercest rivals on Sunday may be too much of an ask for Man Utd.
