Liverpool v Man Utd: Betting Preview

Man Utd travel the short distance to Anfield this Sunday afternoon, where they will take on Liverpool in one of the biggest rivalries in the Premier League, the North West Derby.

Man Utd have historically achieved more success when these teams have played each other throughout history, however bookmakers offer Liverpool as the front-runners to win this one.

It's one of the most highly anticipated derbies of the Premier League season, and although Liverpool haven’t beaten Man Utd in the competition since they managed a cracking 3-0 win back in march 2014, they're the bookmakers favourites to win on Sunday.

José Mourinho’s side may have a better track record over the years, but they've looked unconvincing this season, and will struggle to beat a Liverpool side that's bang on form!

Both teams made it through to the last 16 of this seasons Champions League this week with Liverpool finishing the group stages stronger with a 1-0 win over Napoli to finish second.

Man Utd on the other hand lost their final match away to Valencia 2-1 but also ended up second in their group and secured their position in the latter stages of the Champions League.

In the lead up to the Liverpool v Man Utd match, we've taken a look at both team’s performances of late, and any injuries that could affect either managers preparations for the derby.

Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are having an amazing Premier League season, and continue to be the only unbeaten side in the competition, after Man City lost to Chelsea last weekend.

Their last outing saw The Reds secure a spectacular 4-0 victory against Bournemouth, with Mo Salah scoring 3 of the 4 goals, giving Liverpool the points to knock Man City from the top spot.

Bookmakers offer Liverpool as favourites to beat Man Utd, and although they’ve only won 2 of their last 11 fixtures against United, Liverpool look the much stronger side this season.

If they can take 3 points from this match, Klopp then has a couple of easier fixtures against Wolverhampton and Newcastle before they meet Arsenal at the end of December.

A win against Man Utd would go a long way in helping to hold their position at the top of the league table, and keep Man City at bay over the upcoming busy Christmas period.

Unfortunately, there are a few injury concerns for Liverpool, but it looks as if Lallana, Lovren and Solanke will be fit, although Gomez, Clyne and Oxlade-Chamberlain have all been ruled out.

This won’t be an easy match for Liverpool, it is a North West derby after all, but based on their performances so far this season, there's absolutely no reason why they can beat their rivals.

It’s fair to say that Man Utd aren't having their best season under José Mourinho as they're currently only in 6th place and have only one win in their last 5 Premier League fixtures.

Man Utd also come into the match a staggering 16 points behind league leaders Liverpool having only picked up 6 points out of a possible 15 over the same period.

In fact, Mourinho’s side have only won 7 of their 16 Premier League matches so this season, where as Liverpool have nearly double the number of victories having won 13 out of 16.

Although Man Utd have a better track record against Liverpool, 4 of the last 5 matches against The Reds in all competitions have ended in draws, and Mourinho’s squad could be hard pushed to beat Liverpool in this Sunday’s North West Derby.

Unfortunately Mourinho also has a few key players missing, with Sanchez, Smalling, Shaw and Lindelof all set to remain on the sideline, however Martial and Bailly are expected to return.

Man Utd really could do with another win if they want to even be in with a chance of finishing in the top 4, but Liverpool will not be willing to surrender their unbeaten run to their fierce rivals.

Unfortunately, with Liverpool's amazing home record this season (6 wins, 1 draw) even a stalemate against their fiercest rivals on Sunday may be too much of an ask for Man Utd.
