Liverpool v Everton: Match Preview

The first Merseyside Derby of the new 2025/26 Premier League kicks off this Saturday at Anfield, with reigning champions Liverpool as the odds-on favourites to secure 3 points.

The last time these 2 sides met was back in April, when Liverpool beat Everton 1-0 at Anfield, and Arne Slot will no doubt be looking for a repeat outcome of that match.

Liverpool have also won 3 of their last 5 matches against Everton, and with home advantage, the expected win would see them extend their unbeaten run this season to 5 matches.

Slot’s side have won all 4 of their matches this season, kicking off with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, that was followed up with a 3-2 victory away to Newcastle.

A narrow 1-0 win over title rivals Arsenal, followed by another narrow1-0 win, this time away to Burnley, means Liverpool are currently top of the table with 12 points and a 5+ goal difference.

However, Liverpool's last 2 Premier League wins haven't been that convincing, and only won their Champions League tie in midweek thanks to an injury time goal from Virgil van Dijk.

Everton meanwhile have only lost 1 game so far this season, 1-0 away to Leeds on the opening day, and have generally been playing much better than they did last season.

That loss was followed up with wins against Brighton and Wolverhampton, while last weeks match against Aston Villa resulted in a 0-0 draw, they're still in 6th place on 7 points.

David Moyes will no doubt be preparing his squad for a really tough game against Liverpool, Merseyside derbies always are irrespective of form, and they'll need to be competitive, as well as resilient, to come away from Anfield with with any points.

In the lead up to Liverpool v Everton, we've taken a look at both team’s recent performances, and any player injuries that could affect either managers match preparations.

Liverpool v Everton will be broadcast live on TNT Sports at 12:30pm on Saturday lunchtime.

Liverpool: Team News

Most pundits are expecting Liverpool to field a really strong line-up against their Merseyside rivals, and luckily they have very few injury concerns coming into the Derby.

New signing Alexander Isak is predicted to make his Premier League debut against Everton after starting the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

The Reds broke the British transfer fee record to sign Isak from Newcastle, but he's been focusing on his fitness ever since, and hasn’t yet played for Liverpool in the Premier League.

Curtis Jones remains a concern fitness wise, while Alexis MacAllister seems to be ok after playing 30+ minutes in their Champions League match midweek.

Luckily their Champions League match didn't result in any fresh injury concerns.

After Arne Slot lifted the trophy last year in his debut season managing the team, Liverpool have picked up maximum points so far this season, reaffirming their status as title contenders.

Mo Salah remains a vital presence, combining experience with consistent output, while defensive signings Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong will continue to grow in influence.

Liverpool’s midfield has benefited from improved balance and depth, with Alexis Mac Allister and Florian Wirtz have formed a cohesive unit capable of dictating tempo with defensive cover.

Defensively, Liverpool have been relatively solid, though not perfect.

They’ve conceded 4 goals in 4 matches this season, probably due to lapses in concentration, but luckily Alisson Becker remains one of the league’s most dependable goalkeepers.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté continue to anchor the backline, with back up full-backs Conor Bradley and Andy Robertson remain key in both defence and attack.

Overall, Liverpool’s Premier League campaign is off to a near-perfect start, and although not as fluid as last season, they are playing with confidence, intensity, and tactical clarity.

While tougher fixtures surely lie ahead for Slot's side, early signs suggest that Liverpool are well-positioned to defend their title, and compete on multiple fronts again this season.

Liverpool: Form

Looking at the last 5 fixtures that Liverpool have played in all competitions, they've won 4, drawn 1, and lost 0, scoring a total of 11 goals (2.2 goals per game) and conceding a total of 6 goals.

Everton: Team News

David Moyes has overseen a decent start to Everton’s Premier League campaign, and fortunately only has a few injury concerns ahead of the derby versus Liverpool.

One of those is Vitalii Mykolenko, who missed the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa. It's hoped he'll be back for Saturday’s match, but we’ll have to wait to hear from Moyes in his press conference.

Jarrad Branthwaite’s fitness is still in question, after he suffered 2 injuries in pre-season. He has been spotted in training, but the Liverpool match might come too soon for him to feature.

Everton’s strong ability to create chances and maintain possession has been better than most had hoped for; however, putting the ball in the net consistently has been a challenge.

Jack Grealish has been playing exceptionally well since his move from Man City, generating 4 assists for his teammates over the first 4 games of the season.

Moyes’s sides biggest challenge playing Liverpool will be their ability to convert sufficiently.

While they generally start well, maintaining that n big matches will test their depth. Some matches have seen Everton struggle to see out leads or break down defensively robust teams.

Overall, Everton’s impressive start suggests that they are in better shape than expected.

The attacking flair (especially through Grealish and Ndiaye) is encouraging; if they can improve their finishing, and keep players fit, they'll probably push for a top‑half finish this season.

But there are warning signs: the inability to kill games off when dominant as seen by them only managing 2 shots on target from 20 attempts versus Aston Villa will need to improve.

Everton have a poor record in the Merseyside derby, having only won 2 of the previous 29 Premier League encounters (D14 L13), and failing to score in 5 of the past 7 seven fixtures.

There's also the worrying statistic that Moyes hasn't won a Premier League fixture at Anfield in 20 attempts (D6 L14), and so coming away with any points would be considered a success.

Everton: Form

Everton's record over their last 5 matches in all competitions is won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1. They've scored less goals than Liverpool, 7 in total (1.4 per game), but also conceded less (5).

Liverpool v Everton: Stats

Liverpool have played Everton 297 times since their first match back in 1894, with Liverpool currently having the better record winning 126 fixtures, with 84 wins for Everton.

There have been 66 Liverpool v Everton matches in the Premier League era, with Liverpool having the upper hand again with 29 victories compared to Everton's 11.

Liverpool's wins are fairly evenly distributed with 18 home and 11 away wins, which is in stark contrast to Everton who've only managed 3 away wins over those 66 fixtures.

It's not surprising that Liverpool have scored more goals in this fixture, 92 in total (1.39 goals per game), with Everton only managing to score against their rivals on 57 occasions.

The last Premier League fixture between these two sides occurred on the 2nd of April earlier this year, with Liverpool winning 1-0 in front of a crowd of 60,331 at Anfield Stadium.

Diogo Jota scored the single goal of the game for Liverpool in the 57th minute.

The last 5 Merseyside Derbies to have taken place in the Premier League have resulted in 3 wins for Liverpool, 1 win for Everton, with the other match ending in a 2-2 draw.

Everton have only managed to put the ball in the back of Liverpool's net 4 times over those 5 games, with Liverpool nearly scoring twice the amount, with a total of 7 goals.

The biggest wins that Liverpool have ever had over Everton in the Premier League were a couple of 4-0 victories at Anfield in January of 2014 and then again in April of 2016.

They did put 5 past Everton in a Premier League match at Anfield on the 4th of December 2019, but Everton did manage to pull a couple of goals back in reply with the game ending 5-2.

Divock Origi score a brace, with Xherdan Shaqiri, Sadio Mané and Georginio Wijnaldum adding to Everton's woes. Michael Keane and Richarlison replied for the away side.

The highest score that Everton have ever beaten Liverpool by in the same competition was the 3-0 win on the 9th of September in 2006 when they played each other at Goodison Park.

A total of 40,004 attended this particular Merseyside Derby and witnessed Tim Cahill giving Everton the lead and then a double from Andrew Johnson completing the victory.

Liverpool v Everton - 02/12/2018

As well as Arsenal v Spurs, the other Premier League Derby that's taking place on Sunday is the game that kicks-off at 16:15pm at Anfield when Liverpool play Merseyside rivals Everton...

We've listed online bookmakers best Liverpool v Everton odds below, a preview of the match, and the betting offers to take advantage of if you're having a bet on the Merseyside Derby.

In the second Derby of this weekend’s Premier League action, Everton travel the short distance across the city to Anfield to take on their main Merseyside rivals, Liverpool.

You’ll find bookmakers offering Liverpool as firm favourites to win this Merseyside Derby.

However, with 8 of the last 12 Premier League matches ending in draws, Sunday’s match may not provide Liverpool with the victory they so desperately need.

Liverpool traditionally have more success than Everton when these sides meet in the Premier League, and although 8 of the last 12 fixtures have been draws, Liverpool won the other 4.

Jürgen Klopp’s squad also beat Everton in the FA Cup earlier this year, and while they'll be putting their unbeaten run on the line, there’s no reason why they can’t beat Everton.

The last match where Liverpool played Everton at home at Anfield was when they met in the FA Cup on the 5th of January in 2018 with Liverpool winning the game 2 goals to 1.

James Milner scored a penalty in the 35th minute before a goal from Gylfi Sigurðsson pulled Everton level only for Virgil Van Dijk to win the match for Liverpool in the 84th minute.

In the run up to the Liverpool v Everton Merseyside Derby, we've taken a look at how each side has been performing, and the player injuries that could impact the result of the game.

Liverpool

Liverpool are having a stunning Premier League season, and currently sit just 2 points behind current leaders Man City, as one of only 2 sides that are yet to record their first loss.

Jürgen Klopp’s side are without a doubt the biggest challengers to Man City’s Premier League crown, and they really need 3 points from this fixture if they want to keep the pressure on.

Liverpool have had a couple of strong wins in their last couple fixtures, and while they’re expected to beat Everton, they really need to as Man City face Bournemouth this weekend in what could easily be another win for the current league leaders.

If Liverpool can win before playing Burnley, Bournemouth and the big match against Man Utd just before Christmas, it would put them in a much stronger position heading into the New Year.

Although Klopp has had some concerns with players ill and injured earlier in the week, luckily Sadio Mane and Joe Gomez are expected back in the line up for the Everton match.

Unfortunately Adam Lallana is still in doubt for the Liverpool v Everton match on Sunday while Oxlade-Chamberlain is still missing due to an ACL injury.

Everton

Everton come into the upcoming Merseyside Derby sitting in 6th place in the Premier League table on 22 points with 6 wins, 4 draws and 3 loses under their belt.

Marco Silva’s side have had a pretty average start to their 2018-19 Premier League campaign, but they seem to have turned things around recently, only losing 1 of their last 7 fixtures.

Everton haven’t actually managed to secure a victory against Liverpool in any competition since the 17th of October back in 2010, when they bagged a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park.

Silva’s squad may have beaten Cardiff in their match last weekend, but Liverpool will be entirely different, and it will be a big ask for Everton to beat their on-form Merseyside rivals.

Luckily Silva doesn’t have any major injury worries to contend with ahead of the derby match, and while a win would be a dream outcome for Everton, a draw result is more realistic.

Everton have managed to keep Liverpool at bay in the last 2 fixtures though, having drawn 1-1 at Anfield in December of last year and then a 0-0 draw at home in April earlier this year.
