Chelsea v Liverpool: Betting Preview

Jürgen Klopp’s unbeaten Liverpool side head to Stamford Bridge this Sunday, where they'll face 6th placed Chelsea in the highlight of the weekend’s Premier League action.

Although it’s expected to be an extremely close fought match, bookmakers offer Liverpool as the favourites to take all 3 points, and continue their winning run at the top of the table.

Although Liverpool have had more success against Chelsea in the Premier League in recent years and are in much better form, it’s always a close call between these two sides.

Chelsea have only won 1 of the last 9 Premier League matches against Jurgen Klopp’s men, while Liverpool won 3 of 9 fixtures, with the other 5 ending in draws.

The last time Chelsea beat Liverpool in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge was on the 6th of May in 2018, when they secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a single goal from Olivier Giroud.

That was followed by a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on the 29th of September in the same year, with the last fixture between the two being a 2-0 victory for Liverpool at Anfield.

In the lead up to Chelsea v Liverpool, we've taken a look at both team’s recent performances, and any player injuries or suspensions that could affect either side's match preparations.

Chelsea: Team News

Although Chelsea had a poor opening to their 2019/20 Premier League campaign, they’ve looked more convincing lately, winning 2 of their last 3 fixtures.

Lampard’s side come into the Liverpool match sitting in 6th place in the table on 8 points.

A win on Sunday could give them a much-needed boost towards a top 4 spot, as they're only sitting behind Spurs, Man Utd., and Leicester on goal difference.

Chelsea looked great in their latest match versus Wolves at Molineux Stadium, with Tammy Abraham scoring his first hat-trick in a stunning 5-2 victory for Lampard’s men.

If they can retain that form, they might just beat Liverpool and put themselves in a great position ahead of their next 3 less challenging matches against Brighton, Southampton and Newcastle.

Worryingly, Lampard has quite a list of injuries to contend with, however N’Golo Kante and Emerson Palmieri dos Santos are expected to be back for Sunday’s match.

Unfortunately it looks as if Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Marco van Ginkel, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Antonio Rudiger will miss the the match against Liverpool.

Chelsea: Form

Looking at the last 5 fixtures that Chelsea have played in all competitions, they've won 2, drawn 1, and lost 1 scoring a total of 11 goals (2.2 goals per game) and conceding a total of 8 goals.

Liverpool: Team News

Liverpool are having a sensational start to the new Premier League season, and remain the only team in the competition that haven’t lost a single match.

They head into the Chelsea meeting sitting at the top of the league table on 15 points, after coming from behind to beat Newcastle 3-1 at Anfield last weekend.

There is absolutely no reason why Liverpool shouldn’t beat Chelsea, even though Frank Lampard's side have the home advantage of playing at Stamford Bridge.

It will be close, and Liverpool can’t take anything for granted, but if Mane and Salah continue playing as well as they have been, Klopp should see his side continue their winning run.

The biggest concern for Liverpool is that they travelled to Napoli on Tuesday night and lost their first fixture defending their Champions League crown 2-0.

Luckily, Liverpool don’t have too many injury worries, with Keita expected to be back in time for the Chelsea match, although Becker, Origi and Clyne are still ruled out.

A win for Liverpool is crucial for their title hopes, as 2nd place Man City have a relatively easy fixture, and Liverpool need to keep the pressure on and increase the points gap.

Liverpool: Form

Liverpool's record over their last 5 matches in all competitions is won 4, drawn 0 and lost 1. They've scored the same as Chelsea, 11 in total (2.2 per game) but conceded less (5).

Chelsea v Liverpool: Stats

Chelsea and Liverpool have played each other a total of 183 times since their first match in 1907 with The Reds currently on top having won 79 fixtures, compared to 63 for The Blues.

There have been 54 matches between Chelsea and Liverpool in the Premier League era, with both sides commanding an identical record having each won 20, and drawn 14.

Even more remarkable is the fact that Chelsea have won 14 of those 20 matches at home and 6 away from home - the exact same split that Liverpool's wins are.

The last 5 Premier League fixtures involving both of these sides have resulted in 3 draws, all of them ending 1-1, and 1 win a piece for both Chelsea and Liverpool.

The last match between these two sides was the UEFA Super Cup that played out in Istanbul on the 14th of August in 2019 with the match ending 2-2 after extra time.

Sadio Mané scored both of Liverpool's goals, 1 in normal time, 1 in extra time with Olivier Giroud Jorginho scoring for Chelsea before The Reds won the tie on penalties 5-4.

The last time that Chelsea played Liverpool in front of their home fans at Stamford Bridge was when they met in the Premier League on the 29th of September in 2018.

Club legend Eden Hazard scored for the home side in the 25th with Daniel Sturridge cancelling it out in the 89th minute to earn Liverpool a much needed 1-1 draw.

The biggest win that Chelsea have ever had over Liverpool in the Premier League era was on the 16th of December in 2001 when they won 4-0 in front of their home fans.

A Stamford Bridge crowd of 41,174 saw Chelsea demolish Liverpool with the goals coming from Graeme Le Saux, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Samuele Dalla Bona and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The highest score that Liverpool have ever beaten Chelsea by in a Premier League fixture was the 5-1 win on the 21st of September in 1996 when they met at Anfield.

Manager Roy Evans saw goals from Robbie Fowler, a brace for Patrik Berger as well as one for John Barnes and an own goal from Andy Myers destroy Ruud Gullit's team.

Chelsea v Liverpool - 06/05/2018

Our "must bet on" Premier League match this week is a corker and kicks-off at 4:30pm on Sunday when 5th placed Chelsea take on 3rd placed Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge this Sunday, and Conte’s men will be looking to claim their first Premier League victory over Liverpool since November 2014.

Chelsea have won 2 of the last 6 Premier League fixtures, while the other 4 ended in draws, and so most bookmakers offer them as the favourites to win this clash.

Liverpool are currently 3rd and 6 points ahead of Chelsea, and although Chelsea have a game in hand, they really need to win if they're to keep their hopes alive of finishing in the top 4.

Looking at the stats; 4 of the last 6 Premier League games between Chelsea and Liverpool have ended in draws, and while both teams both want to win, this game could easily go the same way.

This is set to be the most exciting game of this weekends Premier League action, as both teams still have everything to play for, especially with Chelsea wanting to catch Spurs in 4th.

With so much to play for, it's no wonder bookmakers are promoting so many betting offers on the action taking place at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

In the lead up to what’s set to be cracking game, let’s take a look both team’s form and which bookmakers offer best odds on the outcome of Chelsea v Liverpool.

Chelsea

Chelsea come into the Liverpool game in 5th place on 66 points, and although they’ve had a run of impressive Premier League wins against Swansea (1-0), Southampton (3-2) and Burnley (2-1), they really need to beat Liverpool on Sunday.

Chelsea have upcoming fixtures against Huddersfield and Newcastle to play, meaning that there are a potential 9 points still available to them, which could secure them a top 4 finish.

Fortunately Conte doesn’t have as many injury worries to deal with as Liverpool, with only Drinkwater, Luiz and Ampadu set to miss the game.

Bookmakers offer Chelsea as the slight favourites, maybe due to home advantage, and with Liverpool missing some key players, they could easily take the 3 points at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool

Liverpool may have made the Champions League Final, but they haven’t been playing as well as they can in the Premier League, drawing to Stoke and West Brom in their last 2 fixtures.

They head to Stamford Bridge with a 6 point lead over Chelsea, but with only 1 game against Brighton left to play, Klopp really needs to secure all 3 points if they're to finish in the top 4.

Unfortunately, Klopp has quite the list of injuries to contend with, and while some players returned for the midweek Champions League match against Roma, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Matip, Can have all been ruled out of the Chelsea game.

Liverpool have the ability to take victory from Chelsea, but with so may players missing, and a midweek game taking it's toll physically, they'll really need to be on form to do well.

Chelsea v Liverpool - 16/09/2016

Chelsea host Liverpool this Friday night at Stamford Bridge, and Antonio Conte will be hoping a home victory can help Chelsea return to form after the draw with Swansea.

Although Liverpool won the last time they played at Stamford Bridge, online bookmakers offer Chelsea as the favourites to win the match on Friday night.

Before Liverpool’s win back in October, Chelsea hadn’t lost to The Reds in a Premier League game since May 2012 and so the omens are good for a home win.

Games between these teams have been more evenly matched, with 2 of the last 3 games ending in draws, which suggests a tough match for both teams.

While it isn’t expected, a draw wouldn’t be a surprise given the fact that 2 out of the last 3 games between Chelsea and Liverpool have ended in draws.

Chelsea vs Liverpool is live on Sky Sports 1 at 20:00 on Friday September 16th and will be a good match to use the bonus bets that bookmakers offer new signups.

Chelsea

Chelsea are having a strong season, and are currently holding 2nd place on 10 points after their first 4 games of the season.

They haven’t lost a game yet, bagging 3 fantastic wins against Burnley (3-0), Watford (2-1) and West Ham (2-1) before succumbing to a draw against Swansea.

It won’t be a walk in the park for Chelsea, but Conte will be determined to secure a win in this home game, and hold their top 4 spot.

The main injury worry ahead of the game lies with John Terry, who left the Swansea game on crutches at the weekend.

This could mean that David Luiz will make his second debut, perhaps alongside Marcos Alonso given Branislav Ivanovic’s performance last time out.

Kurt Zouma will also be missing, but overall there’s nothing major for Conte to worry about.

If you’re betting that bookmakers favourite Chelsea will win the match, Bet365 offers best odds on a home win at 6/5.

Liverpool

Liverpool haven’t had the best start to their Premier League campaign, and they really need to start winning more games if they want a better finish than last season’s 8th place.

Jürgen Klopp’s squad have won less than half of their games since he took over, and after only 4 games, the team already has a makeshift look to it.

The Reds are currently in 6th place, having only won 2 of their first 4 Premier League games.

They secured a 4-3 victory over Arsenal in the opening game of the season, but then suffered a loss to Burnley. This was followed up by a draw with Spurs and then an amazing 4-1 victory against last season’s winners Leicester.

Playing right-footed midfield players in left defence positions may have worked against Leicester, but there are still questions about these type of tactics!

There’s no doubt that Liverpool can beat Chelsea when they are on form, however there are a couple of injury worries for Klopp, with Dejan Lovren and Emre Can still doubtful.

If you’re betting on Liverpool coming away from Stamford Bridge with 3 points, Coral offers best odds at 12/5.
