France v Belgium: Preview

After an easy 2-0 win over Uruguay in the Quarter-Finals, France will now face neighbours Belgium in the Semi-Finals of WC 2018 at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg.

Belgium made it through to the Semi-Finals by beating five-time winners Brazil  2-1 and have reached this stage of the competition for the first time since the tournament back in 1986.

The other Semi-Final of WC 2018 will be contested by Croatia and England. Make sure you check out bookmakers best odds for Croatia v England if you're betting on the game.

France and Belgium have faced each other on numerous occasions, however Belgium have had slightly more success, securing 30 victories compared to France’s 24.

Without a doubt this will be a tough game for both teams, and with a spot in the final as the prize, this is set to be one of the closest and most exciting games of the tournament.

France have had a pretty decent run in reaching the Semi-Finals. They've also won 4 of their 5 games so far, and only had to deal with one draw against Denmark.

Although the French didn’t look very inspiring in their early games, they’ve improved greatly and looked to be on fire in their matches against Argentina and Uruguay.

Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe are among the top goalscorers in Russia, and if they can continue the form that saw Mbappe score 2 goals in under 4 minutes against Argentina, the Belgian defence could be under a lot of pressure against a strong French forward line.

The last time France won the competition was back in 1998, when current manager Didier Deschamps captained the French squad to a 3-0 victory over Brazil on home soil.

Another win for France, this time with Deschamps as manager, would be a dream come true for the former player and he'll be looking for his players to help him achieve it.

Belgium are on a fantastic run at the moment, knocking out tournament favourites Brazil, while also being the only team in the Semi-Finals who’ve won all of their games in 90 minutes of play.

Belgium's recent victories over 2 of the strongest teams in the competition will give them a major confidence boost as they head into the Semi-Final as the bookmakers underdogs.

Roberto Martínez’s Belgian side shouldn’t be underestimated though, as they’ve proved their ability to beat just about anyone and are currently ranked 3rd in the World Rankings.

Lukaku has been a key part of their success, and if they continue to play as they have been, Belgium could earn a place in the Final against either Croatia or England.

France may be the favourite to win their first Semi-Final since 2006, but Belgium are an excellent team and could show France why they are the higher ranked team!

Whatever the outcome of this clash between two of Europe’s heavyweight’s, it’s set to be a great game to watch no matter which side you'd like to see reach the Final.

France v Belgium: Stats

France and Belgium have contested a total of 73 fixtures against each other with Belgium having the better record having won on 30 occasions, drawing 19 games and losing 24 times.

The last time there was a France v Belgium fixture, was the international friendly on the 7th of June in 2005 when Belgium won 4-3 at the Stade de France in Paris.

Belgium's 4-3 win in France's backyard would have looked more impressive but for the fact that France scored twice in the last two minutes of the game avoiding a 4-1 loss on home soil.

The biggest win that France have had over Belgium in the last 50 years was the 5-0 win on the 16th of June in 1984 when they met in Group A of the European Championships.

Belgium's biggest win over France in the same time period was the 2-0 win at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels in Qualification Group 2 of WC 1982.

The last time these two sides actually met in the competition was back in 1986 when France beat Belgium 4-2 to claim 3rd spot in Mexico.
