Chelsea v Arsenal: Preview
The highlight of Saturday’s Premier League action is without question the trip that Unai Emery's Arsenal will be making to Stamford Bridge when they take on Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea.
Bookmakers odds have Chelsea as favourites to win, and if they play anything like they did in last weeks 3-0 away win at Huddersfield, they'll definitely be taking all three points off Arsenal.
In saying that, Arsenal did just edge it in their pre-season friendly in Dublin, when Peter Cech denied his old club a victory in an exciting 6-5 penalty shoot out after it ended 1-1 in 90 minutes.
This is a key game for both clubs, as neither Chelsea nor Arsenal managed to secure a top 4 spot last season, and both sides come into the 2018-19 season under new management.
Only 7 points separated Chelsea and Arsenal at the end of last season, and while bookmakers offer Chelsea as the favourites to win at home, overall Arsenal have the better track record.
Chelsea had a strong start to their 2018-19 Premier League campaign under their new manager Maurizio Sarri, kicking off with a 3-0 win against Huddersfield in their opening fixture.
That opening match also saw new signing Jorginho score in his first appearance, and Chelsea currently sit in 2nd place in the Premier League table.
They may have the home advantage in this London derby, but the last time Chelsea beat their London rivals was in February 2017, and they’ve not beaten them in the 6 matches since then.
Online bookmakers offer Sarri’s team as the firm favourites, but Arsenal shouldn’t be underestimated and this won’t be an easy match for Chelsea by any means.
Luckily Sarri has no major injury worries to contend with, and fortunately Chelsea also don’t have too many difficult teams to play in their next few matches.
A 3 point victory over rivals Arsenal would put them in a good position at this stage of the competition, but they’ll probably have to work quite hard to get those 3 points.
Unfortunately Unai Emery didn’t have a great start to the season as Arsenal's manager losing 2-0 in their opening fixture to Man City, and currently in 15th place in the table.
Although they lost to last seasons Champions, Arsenal are a strong team on paper, and with a number of new signings including Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, they might just get something out of the match.
A win or even a draw would be good for Arsenal following their opening match loss, as they really don’t want to get on the back foot this early in the season.
Luckily The Gunners don’t have any tough fixtures after the Chelsea match, as they'll face West Ham, Cardiff and Newcastle which gives them the opportunity to put points on the board.
While bookmakers offer Chelsea as favourites to win, and look the stronger team, Arsenal should never be ruled out when looking at previous results from this fixture.
Chelsea v Arsenal kicks-off at 5.30pm on Saturday August 18th.
