Liverpool v Man City: Match Preview

One of the most important fixtures of the Premier League takes place this Sunday, when 2nd placed Man City head to Anfield to take on league leaders Liverpool.

Although Liverpool are undefeated this season, most online bookmakers actually offer Man City as the favourites to win this one, but it's gonna be an extremely close one to call.

Liverpool have a 6 point advantage over Man City, and Pep Guardiola ‘s side really can’t afford to lose this fixture, as it would put even further distance between the top 2 teams.

Both have played Champions League matches this week that could impact on their weekend performances, and they'll both need to consider which players to rest ahead of the game.

Liverpool had the best fixture ahead of Sunday's match as the beat Genk 2-1 at Anfield on Tuesday where as Man City travelled to Atalanta on Wednesday and recorderd a 1-1 draw.

It’s been pretty evenly pitched between these teams over the last few Premier League seasons, with Man City securing a 2-1 home victory in their last match back in January.

They also won the Community Shield match between these tow sides back in August, while Liverpool won both Champions League matches against Man City in 2018.

In the last 10 Premier League matches involving both sides, Liverpool have won 5 of the matches, while Man City have won 3 fixtures and the other 2 ended in draws.

Although bookmakers offer Man City as the favourites, Liverpool have home advantage and there’s absolutely no reason why a team that remains unbeaten won’t beat City on Sunday.

In the lead up to Liverpool v Man City, we've taken a look at both team’s recent performances, and if any key players are injured or ruled out that could affect either side's match preparations.

Liverpool: Team News

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are having an absolutely stunning 2019/20 Premier League campaign as they're the only side that is still yet to lose a match.

They’ve won 10 of their 11 matches so far, and currently sit at the top of the league table on 31 points, 6 points ahead of Man City who are closely chasing them in 2nd place.

Klopp’s men had an impressive victory over Aston Villa (2-1) last weekend, on the back of a 2-1 victory over Spurs in their previous outing and seem to winning matches late on in the game.

Although bookmakers offer Liverpool as underdogs, they could easily take a full 3 points, which would put them in a perfect position ahead of a run of less challenging fixtures.

This would put them in an extremely strong position and further stretch the gap between themselves and Man City ahead of busy Christmas period that'll soon be upon us.

Luckily Klopp doesn’t have too many injury worries, with only Joel Matip (knee), Xherdan Shaqiri (calf strain) and Nathaniel Clyne (cruciate ligament) set to miss this crucial fixture.

Liverpool: Form

Looking at the last 5 fixtures that Liverpool have played in all competitions, they've won 4, drawn 1, and not lost scoring a total of 15 goals (3 goals per game) and conceding a total of 9 goals.

Man City: Team News

The defending Premier League champions head into the Liverpool clash, having won 8 of their 11 matches, and only losing 2 and drawing 1 so far this season.

Guardiola’s men sit in closely contended 2nd place on 25 points, and really need to take 3 points from Sunday’s match to close the gap on their main rivals. for the Premier League title.

A loss against Liverpool could really upset their campaign, as they have a few tough matches against Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal coming up soon afterwards.

Losing and allowing Liverpool to further extend the gap would be a disaster for Guardiola, and although bookmakers offer City as the favourites, it won't be an easy match for either side.

Man City have had 3 good wins in a row against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Southampton, but they have made some serious rookie errors in defence, and clearly needs to improve.

Guardiola also has a few injury concerns to contend with, with playmaker David Silva in doubt having come off in the 2-1 win against Southampton last weekend.

Aymeric Laporte, Leroy Sane, Rodrigo and Oleksandr Zinchenko have also been ruled out, and Guardiola will be hoping for no more injuries in their midweek Champions League fixture.

Realistically, odds are pretty short on both sides, and this match could go either way.

Both sides need a win to put them in a stronger position, and neither will want their opposition to get 3 points, which sets this up as one of the most exciting fixture we’ve seen in a while.

Man City: Form

Man City's record over their last 5 matches in all competitions is won 4, drawn 1 and lost 0. They've scored one less goal than Liverpool, 14 in total, but conceded less (4).

Liverpool v Man City - 14/01/2018

Liverpool host Man City at Anfield this Sunday, and Jurgen Klopp’s men will be determined not to suffer a second crushing defeat at the hands of league leaders Man City!

Liverpool may have home advantage, but bookmakers offer Man City as favourites, and given their performances of late, a Man City victory wouldn’t come as a big surprise.

Man City come into this clash with a 16 point lead having lost none of their games so far this season, while Liverpool are sitting in 4th place, just 3 points clear of 5th placed Spurs.

A Liverpool victory may be a tough ask, but a win for Klopp’s men would give them a much needed boost at this point of the season, and also end City’s amazing unbeaten run.

Draws haven’t been that common when Liverpool play Man City with only 1 Premier League fixture actually ending in a draw since as far back as February 2013.

It may not be the most expected outcome, but Liverpool will be determined not to suffer a loss and lose more ground on the league leaders, and so a draw could be a realistic outcome.

If you're betting on neither team doing enough to win, Bet Victor offers the best odds at 14/5 plus a super generous signup offer for punters registering a new online betting account.

You can watch Liverpool v Man City live on SkySports at 16:00 on Sunday January 14th.

Liverpool

Liverpool are back in the top 4 having won 4 of their last 5 Premier League games, and are currently sitting just 3 points behind 2nd placed North West rivals Man Utd.

Liverpool are looking strong ahead of their clash with Man City, and come into the game on the back of decent victories over Burnley, Leicester and Swansea.

Although they have a couple of easier games coming up, Klopp really needs to secure as many points as possible if they want to hold on to a top 4 spot.

Unfortunately, Klopp has a few injury concerns to contend with in the lead up to the game.

Star man Salah as well as Sturridge, Henderson and Moreno are all still in doubt, and the squad could really benefit from having them back in the line up for Sunday’s match.

If you’re betting that Liverpool will grab a home win and beat Man City on Sunday afternoon, Betfair offers the best odds at 2/1 plus a great signup offer for all new customers.

Man City

Man City are having a fantastic season, and bookmakers don't expect them to lose thier first Premier League match of the season against Liverpool on Sunday.

Guardiola’s men have won 20 of their 22 game so far, only dropping 4 points all season and are 16 points clear of Man Utd who currently reside in second place.

Guardiola’s City are on fire, and have already beat Liverpool 5-0 in the first game of the season.

It’s easy to see why bookmakers offer Man City as the favourites given their recent performances, but Liverpool have a lot to play for and won’t make it easy for them!

Guardiola doesn’t even have too many injury concerns ahead of the Liverpool clash with only Kompany, Jesus, Foden and Mendy set to miss the match.

Man City are very difficult to beat, and it’s no surprise that odds on them winning are so short.

If you’re betting on Man City coming away from Anfield with all three points, William Hill offers the best odds at 11/8 plus a great signup offer for new account holders.
